wedding wednesday: chiffon

One of my favorite fabrics for outdoor summer weddings is chiffon.  Whether it is used in the wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, or decor, I think it is just stunning.  I love how soft, romantic and flowy it is, and it brings in a touch of whimsy into the wedding.

{1} Mori Lee Bridal Gown 1809 - The Wedding Shoppe - $798
{2} Jim Hjelm JH 5908 - Half Bridal - $275
{3} J.Crew Arabelle Dress Silk Chiffon - J.Crew - $250

The same holds true when you use chiffon inspired fabrics in your home decor.  You can achieve that same sense of whimsy by using sheer curtains in various places throughout your home.  When the windows are open, this delicate fabric will flow in the breeze, creating such an airy and romantic space.  Below are some of my favorite places to use sheers in your home.

y lighting: taraxacum

Some exciting stuff happened yesterday: I got a new client!  And not just any client, a full blown, full house redesign.  I'm excited beyond words, and can't wait to help transform their space.  While I was searching for some inspirational images, I stumbled upon this one, and fell in loooove with that chandelier...so I thought I had to share it with you all for Friday Favorites.

The chandelier is made by Y Lighting, and is the Taraxacum 88 S1.  I think it is just STUNNING, although it's price is pretty steep.  I'm sure with a litte searching, however, someone could find something similar in a more affordable price range.  Until then, I'll just dream about this one.

wedding wednesday: bridal shower edition

This past Saturday, my lovely maid of honor and bridesmaids threw me the most amazing shower, followed by a ridiculously fun bachelorette party.  It was such a wonderful day, and I felt so blessed to have my nearest and dearest friends there to share it with me.  Not only that, but three girls even flew in for it...how lucky am I?!  So, today for Wedding Wednesday I thought I'd show you just how fabulous of a job these girls did.  Be prepared to be blown away.

We started out the morning at my house for the shower.  Unluckily for us, it happened to be the hottest day we've had thus far in Minnesota, and our air conditioning decided it wanted to break down the night before.  So we were all a little warm to say the least, but we still had a fabulous time.  I'm obsessed with Paris and I swear if I spoke French I'd live there, so, knowing me all too well, they decided to throw a French themed shower.

So maybe bloody mary's aren't exactly French...but I love them, so lay off.  :)  Also, see that fabulous buffet back there?  More to come on that in a later post.

Along with the bloody mary's, we had deeeelicious mimosas, and wine from baby bottles.  Yes, you read that right.  When my maid of honor and I were in Paris last year, we went to this amazing hole-in-the-wall fondue restaurant where they served, yes, you guessed it, their wine in baby bottles.  It was SO much fun...and if you're ever in Paris, you NEED to go there.  So, needless to say, I laughed pretty hard when I saw the bottles.

We had this amazing spread of food: strawberry and nutella crepes (which is one of my all-time favorites) as well as croissants, French bread, fresh fruit, three different types of quiche, and some oh-so-delicious cupcakes.

As you can probably see (and guess), our main wedding color is aqua, so everything at the shower (even all the presents, I swear), was that color.  Well, I was locked upstairs while they were all setting up, and apparently they all shared a good laugh in my behalf because when they went to the cupboard to get plates to put the food on, one of the girls saw these black plates on the top shelf.  Thinking they would match pretty well, they took them down, only to find out those too were aqua.  When I came downstairs, they gave me a pretty hard time, saying, "Really Kirsten, you WOULD have aqua plates."  What can I say :)  But hey, they matched the party decor!

Also, when I came downstairs, I was greeted by these lovely ladies (my bridesmaids), and much to our surprise, we all were wearing blue.  And I swear, none of us planned it.  We shared a good laugh over that one.

Then all my other lovely friends showed up, we ate, drank, played games, and opened gifts.  Oh, and guess what I got?!  An aqua Kitchenaid mixer!  I have the best bridesmaids ever, I swear.  The only disappointment was that Kelsey, my vet-schooler bridesmaid, wasn't able to steal the golden retriever puppies she had promised to giveaway as party favors ;)
(If you haven't seen Bridesmaids, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR...get on it).

Later that evening, we headed downtown to the Radisson, where I was greeted by another large display of scrumptious food (those little black things on the bottom right are homemade chocolate covered pomegranate seeds - TO DIE FOR), and even more presents (what did I do to deserve all of this?!).  We opened gifts, and then headed out for our first outing of the evening: The Pedal Pub.

The Pedal Pub is the most fun thing ever.  You all sit around it and bike from bar to bar.  If you have one in your city, you absolutely must get a group together and try it out.  This is my second one and I already want to do it again.

After two hours on the pedal pub, we headed back to the hotel, got into our black dress attire, and headed out on the town for the rest of the evening.  It was such a wonderful evening and I couldn't have asked for a better group of girls to spend it with.

PS, sorry the pictures aren't the greatest quality, I had to steal them from all my friends...and thanks to my MOH for snapping all the ones she did at the shower!

TYFD: how to spice up your space without paint

Last Monday, we all met Sue.  Sue wanted to add some color to her space, but her landlord wouldn’t let her paint.  Not knowing what to do, she came to me for a little Through YOUR Front Door advice.  Since this unfortunately is a problem that too many of us encounter, I knew I couldn’t pass up this issue.  So, what do you do when you’re faced with this situation?  Continue reading to find out.

1) Wallpaper
Wait, did I just say wallpaper?  You’re probably all scratching your head and asking yourself if I seriously think a landlord who won’t let tenants paint will let tenants put up wallpaper.  Why yes, yes I do.  You see, as I’ve talked about before, gone are the days when wallpaper was this nasty, nasty thing.  Today, they make the most amazing thing ever: REMOVABLE wallpaper.  Yes folks, you read that right.  Stick it on, peel it off.  It’s that simple.

One of my favorites once upon a time was called NextWall, but when I went to link this up to it, their website was MIA (gasp!).  If this company has gone out of business, I think I will cry.  Not only was their wallpaper removable, but also eco-friendly, which in my book, is a huuuuge plus.  I must investigate this issue…

So, since I can’t rant and rave about NextWall, I found something just about as good to tell you all about: TempaperTempaper is a removable wallpaper that is essentially a blank canvas.  AKA, YOU CAN PAINT IT.  (Okay, I cheated, I know this was supposed to be how to decorate without painting, but once I saw this product I could not NOT talk about it).  I mean, let’s be real.  How cool is that?  You can literally draw all over your walls, and then peel it off when you’re sick of looking at it.  Ah-mazing.

2) Area rugs
Adding a large, colorful rug in your space can do wonders to brighten up your room.  I love when people use a bright rug, and then have small accents of that color throughout the room, because it really pulls everything together.

3) Fabric
Curtains are amazing.  In rooms with white walls, I am a HUGE advocate of floor to ceiling curtains in a stunning color.  A little trick is to even extend the curtains so they are wider than the windows, because then the white walls behind are hardly noticeable.

In addition to curtains, you could create a canopy in your bedroom to add some spunk to your space and add some color, or your can even line the walls with fabric (think super-luxurious curtains walls….sigh).

Last, the other obvious colorful fabric comes in the form of your blankets.  When your blankets match or complement your curtains, it helps to create a cohesive color scheme in your room, with the white walls simply acting as a neutral backdrop.

4) Photo Walls
Gallery walls (aka photo walls) are a great way to break up the monotony of a plain white wall.  You can keep the frames all a consistent black for a clean, contemporary look and lots of contrast, or you can add some flair (a la Office Space), and create a wall with colorful frames.  Don’t go too crazy though…two or three colors will suffice.  To read more about this, check out my posts about gallery walls, photo ledges, photo arrays, hanging photos, and picture walls

5) Embrace the White
This is one of my favorite options, but it is also very much so in my design aesthetic.  Instead of trying to mask your white walls in the ways I have mentioned above, you could always embrace the white.  By pairing the walls with other subtle, pastel fabrics and accents, you create a very soft, feminine feeling space that is just as gorgeous as any painted room.

If soft and feminine isn’t your cup of tea, you can go in the opposite direction while still embracing the white: go bold.  Instead of pairing the white with pastels, add some serious contrast in your space by creating a black and white space.  The results are striking.

For Sue’s bedroom, I would love to see her work with what she already has.  By adding a rug that complements the red in her comforter and perhaps some floor length curtains, the space could be drop dead gorgeous.  To help break up the white walls, I would add some sort of photomontage, and I think it would be striking to use bold black frames.  For a little extra credit, I’d even recommend putting black and white pictures in the frames, but add a little photoshop love and have some red accents in the black and white pictures.

We'll be taking a break from TYFD next Monday since I'll be up basking on one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes on Memorial Day, but the week after that we'll be back for more!  This means you have even more time to get your submissions in....so get on it :)  Have a lovely Tuesday!

To submit your space for TYFD, please like Kirsten Danielle Design on Facebook and post a picture of your space/dilemma to the wall.  If you're a blogger, please write a short post with your pictures, grab the button below and link up, or lastly, you can email me pictures of your space with a short description.  For more information click here.  Please submit your spaces by May 31st.

a contemporary kitchen

Today for Friday Favorites, I have found possibly one of the most GORGEOUS backsplashes I have ever seen.  These images are from the kitchen of Rosenthal Residence by Fiorella Design.  I'm drooling.

Doesn't it look just stunning paired with the sleek appliances, the stainless steel shelves, and the white marble counter?  Now if only I could walk downstairs and find that in my kitchen...

It's a short post, I know...but one of my best friends is in town from Denver and staying with me this weekend for my bachelorette party...so no offense, but I'd rather hang out with her than write a novel :)  Oh, and if you would, please cross your fingers, pray to the rain gods, do an anti-rain tribal dance: it's supposed to thunderstorm tomorrow, which would be a major bummer seeing as a large portion of our activities are outside.  More to come on that later though.  Have a lovely weekend!

creative uses for old wine bottles

As I sit here and enjoy a fabulous glass of wine, the idea came to me to do a post in honor of what I am currently consuming.  Today for "wedding wednesday," we're going to talk about how you can reuse old wine bottles in your home.  We've seen them frequently used in wedding decor, whether it be as candle holders, table numbers, or whatever other creative things you artsy fartsy people come up with...so I thought I'd investigate what other ways we can repurpose this item.

While I love the idea of repurposing wine bottles as vases or using them to create a coffee table, my favorite way to reuse wine bottles is in light fixtures.  It adds an element of "fun" to your space, and sets your home apart from everyone else's.

I'm obsessed with the last example.  Primarily because it reminds me of a DIY knockoff of these chandeliers:
